Here is a recipe for an easy traditional Slovak apple cake. It consists of a cinnamon apple filling between two layers of dough.It is based on recipe from sme.sk. We made this desert to go with our “Thanksgiving” stuffed trout.
My Teta Gita in Sliac made this for me years ago and I’ve never forgotten it. It’s so simple but that’s the beauty of it I guess. I can’t wait to make it. I’ve thought about it many times and wanted the recipe for a long time, so many thanks!
My grandma used to make whst she calked apple cake in a 9×13 pan with a crust, chunked apples ans some kind of struesel topping. Does anyine know this recipe?
This recipe is outstanding. I am not Slovak and I never saw this cake ever in my life before I found it here. I asked my Slovak boyfriend if he wanted me to try it. His eyes lit up and he replied with an enthusiastic “YES!”
Neither of us were disappointed. The cake came out perfect. I would recommend this recipe to anyone.

Does anyone know a recipe for a cake that has a sauerkraut filling? My boyfriend’s grandmother used to make it but she didn’t leave the recipe behind when she passed away.
I must try this! I made walnut roll for Christmas and it was very well received!!! Thank you for posting the recipe. My aunts did not leave me their recipes and they learned from my “Babka” from Bratislava. I like that the breads and rolls are not toooooo sweet!

I made a similar apple cake the other day, but I only used 1teaspoon of baking powder.
Your recipe calls for 1 tablespoon, so I am a bit confused. My jablkovy kolac turned out just like the picture.

I came to your site when looking for the right term to call my apple cake. At first, I thought I would name it an apple pie, but that evokes an English type of dessert, which is different from ours.
They do look very similar, so it’s good to know there are Slovaks out there who still want to follow these tried & tested old recipes.

My husband’s favorite that his mother…born in Slovakia…used to make. In hers though the “cake” part is more pastry cake like…also made with egg like yours. Then the thinly sliced apples are layered with fresh bread crumbs, ground walnuts, and cinnamon sugar .until all is used…..topped with a crust which is brushed with egg white. Served with powdered sugar on top. So…they are very similar.
So glad I found this site. I cooked many of these recipes with My grandmother and my mother. Thanks to all who publish these bank keep the Slovakian tastes alive.
My Oma made a similar cake. She was Swabian German from the former Yugoslavia. My family had lived there for generations. We are now in Austria and the U.S. This is a delicious cake you can have any time. I enjoy baking it during the holidays.
My mother was from Ruzomberok, Slovakia. She made this frequently ( I grew up in New York). Her recipe included a handful of bread crumbs and ground walnuts to thicken the apple filling. There was also some sour cream in the dough. We called it Jablcnik (yabulchneek), but looked just like yours. MYyhusband’s favorite. I’m going to try to recreate it.
This sounds so tasty. I’m in luck I have a pile of apples that need to be used up. A dear old family friend was Slovak but she passed before I could ask her if her family made this recipe. She was born 1935 and they were a poor family. What sort of foods would they have made? Any suggestions are welcome. Thank you very kindly.
